UFR SoCLE (Societies, Cultures and Foreign Languages)

SoCLE stands for Societies, Cultures and Foreign Languages. A significant acronym for a Training and Research Unit (UFR) whose essential object is none other than the world - our world - understood in its fundamental plurality.

We live in a plural and heterogeneous world. This is what makes it so undeniably rich, but also so complex. To live here is necessarily to rub shoulders with the Other. When traveling, at work, in the media, through cultural works... encounters with other cultures, other customs, other peoples speaking "other" languages are a daily occurrence. Yet how can we hope to understand and communicate effectively (especially in the workplace) if we lack the linguistic and cultural foundations necessary for dialogue?

Studying at the UFR SoCLE means making the resolute choice of plurilingualism and theopen-mindedness because the aim is not only to learn to master one or more foreign languages, but also to gain in-depth knowledge of the societies in which these same languages are used. So, from English-speaking world to the Spanish- and Arabic-speaking worlds, via Germany, Italy, China, Japan and Russia, in total eight linguistic and cultural areas which, through multi-disciplinary approaches designed by our teaching teams, are the subject of in-depth analysis. Whether in the Applied foreign languages (LEA) or theForeign and regional languages, literatures and civilizations (LLCER)our training courses are characterized by the following features fruitful convergence of the linguistic, cultural and societal.

For us, "plurilingualism" is not an empty word. A foreign language is spoken, pronounced, articulated, listened to and translated. It is governed by rules (grammatical, phonetic, syntactic...) that you need to master if you wish to understand and be understood with ease and precision. But a foreign language is also a people (always composite) who speak it, and a history (always complex) in which it is rooted. Choosing to study at UFR SoCLE therefore means acquire in-depth knowledge of history, the history of ideas, politics, economics, literature and the arts. This knowledge means of understanding today's world and its major societal challenges.

In addition to these fundamental knowledge, these are obviously know-how that can be transposed and mobilizeds in many contexts (we're thinking primarily here of the professional context), which our students develop: speaking in public, delivering an intelligible, coherent message (in French and in one or more foreign languages), setting up a project and bringing it to fruition, taking a step back, analyzing data, comparing, translating, problematizing, prioritizing ideas, commenting, arguing constructively, questioning with relevance, criticizing wisely... In today's digital age, where information (often anecdotal or even misleading) circulates at high speed, where "comments" are only a few characters long, where "explanations" are a fragmentary skimming exercise, the background knowledge become very precious, the real skills an asset, and thecritical thinking a necessity.

Every year, over 2,500 students decide to come and train at our UFR. They are taken care of, on our two sites from Saint-Martin-d'Hères and ValenceOur students are trained by a team of nearly 170 teachers and lecturers, as well as around 20 administrative staff. With rigor and enthusiasm, we train them to become enlightened and informed citizens, competent in their chosen fields of expertise, and destined for stimulating professional careers. Our involvement with them is tangible, because their presence at the University is already a foundation - they are the bedrock of tomorrow's society.

At every stage of your training, the UFR librarywith over 32,000 references, will provide you with a place to work and research documents, as well as access to a wealth of resources essential to any student of foreign languages.

On this site you will find information about various training courses proposed by the UFR SoCLE, on the research on the dynamics of the company, the projects it is involved in, and our LOCATIONS and work environments, as well as on the many international exchanges, further studies and career opportunities available to our students.
