Memory of insubordination and unsubordinated bodies

From text to image, from image to garment. LGBTQ+ Dissidences
Culture
Disidencia as portrayed by Chilean writer Pedro Lemebel // Non-binary sexuality
This workshop was held as part of a colloquium on resistance and the October 2019 revolt in Chile. Silkscreen artists from the Chilean collective Ser&Gráfica worked on the rights at the heart of the 2019 People's Revolt, focusing their silkscreen work from an LGBTQI+ rights perspective.
The project took place at the MaCI, which the students knew but hadn't always created. They had seen shows and listened to lectures, but this time they had to create a screen-printed object.

Successful aspect: last year's students who had practiced silk-screening were familiar with the technical aspects (preparing the support, cutting the stencil, mounting the frames, mixing the ink, etc.) and were able to help the others, in a process of transmission. On the other hand, a higher level of involvement was required, involving subjectivity and intimacy in a framework of reflection on sensitive issues such as dissident sexualities, according to heteronormativity. During the workshop (approx. 4 hours), great respect and delicacy were shown by both the artists, who have experienced repression in Chile's patriarchal society, and the students, who form a generation that is very open to these issues. Students and academics worked horizontally, which is something to be emphasized.

Students were able to :
  • Create with artists in an international setting and in the language of training (for students on the Hispanic course)
  • Working with artists who are recognized in their country: exhibition at the Centre de arte Cerilllos, artists who are part of the anthology of Chilean artists published in 2022.
  • Discover a new way of learning outside the classroom, by moving from words (those of dissident sexualities) to images (which come up against stereotypes) in an interdisciplinary perspective advocated by the H3S1 faculty.
  • Using this workshop to combat homophobia in other ways: in line with the objectives of the UGA and the Equality and Diversity Mission.
  • Establish a new relationship between your body and learning: put your body in motion in a place dedicated to creation like MaCI.
